Why filtration matters more on heavy equipment
- Huge air volumes: a 12-litre truck engine draws over 20 cubic metres of air per minute under load. Any dust that gets through becomes sandpaper inside the cylinders.
- Dust is not theoretical here: the roads of northeastern Syria, harvest seasons and dust storms push particle loads far beyond European service assumptions.
- Variable fuel quality: local diesel can carry water, sediment and higher sulphur — fuel filtration is life or death for the injection system.
- Long running hours: a generator running 12 hours a day equals tens of thousands of kilometres per year.
1. The air filter: guardian of the cylinders
- Choose media with at least 99.5% efficiency and dense, evenly spaced pleats.
- In very dusty environments add a cyclonic pre-cleaner or an inner safety element behind the main filter.
- Trust the restriction indicator where fitted — it is more accurate than a visual check.
- Never blow the filter out with compressed air to reuse it. Compressed air tears the paper fibres microscopically, turning the filter into an open door for dust. Cleaning is an emergency measure only; replacement is the rule.
2. The oil filter: the engine's kidney
- Filtration rating: effective capture at ≤ 20 microns; particles between 5 and 20 microns do the most bearing damage.
- Bypass valve: must be precisely calibrated — a poor valve opens early and passes unfiltered oil continuously.
- Anti-drainback valve: keeps the filter primed at shutdown and protects against dry starts.
- Replace the oil filter at every oil change, no exceptions — an old filter contaminates fresh oil within minutes.
3. Fuel filters and water separators: the critical ones in our market
Modern common-rail injection runs above 2,000 bar with micron-level clearances — any water or debris means injector damage worth more than a hundred filters.
- Use two-stage filtration: a primary filter with a water separator, then a secondary filter rated 2–10 microns before the high-pressure pump.
- Drain the separator bowl at least weekly — daily in humid seasons or when fuelling from questionable tanks.
- Don't wait for power loss or hard starting; gradual clogging silently overworks the lift pump.
Practical replacement intervals for local conditions
- Air filter: inspect every 250 h; replace on indicator signal or every 500–1,000 h (sooner in heavy dust).
- Oil filter: at every oil change — every 250–500 running hours or 10–20,000 km for trucks depending on load.
- Secondary fuel filter: every 500 h or 20–30,000 km.
- Primary filter / water separator: drain weekly; replace every 250–500 h.
Genuine vs counterfeit: how to tell
- Weight: genuine filters are usually heavier — denser media, thicker steel.
- Pleats: regular, even depth, springy under light pressure.
- Seams and threads: clean welds, precisely cut threads.
- Packaging: spelling mistakes or faded print are an instant red flag.
